The European Commission in its aim to boost the use of renewable hydrogen in Europe, has launched the Clean Hydrogen Alliance.
In the framework of this Alliance, the Commission has identified a list of European renewable hydrogen projects in which hydrogen clusters will play a key role in the deployment of these projects on a large scale.
On the basis of this information, the first group of clusters identified will be: in France, the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region; Estonia; and in Spain, in the north the region of Asturias.
Other groups will be added following ongoing evaluations and contacts with various authorities in EU countries.
To facilitate their implementation, it is proposing various funding mechanisms through direct grants, such as the Innovation Fund, or through financial tools from the European Investment Bank.
In those areas where a singular concentration of projects has been identified, such as Asturias, a specific support mechanism called tHrive has been developed.
The approach of the tHrive Project is to promote EU hydrogen clusters. A first step will be, together with the relevant national/regional authorities, to invite stakeholders with planned hydrogen projects in these clusters to a workshop to present their projects, discuss the bottlenecks they face, and examine how we can accelerate their deployment. Other Alliance members interested in undertaking a project in the relevant clusters will also be able to attend these meetings.
