CO2 in the clouds

World Day for CO₂ Emissions Reduction₂.

Today, in the World Day for CO₂ Emissions Reduction₂.we want to highlight the impact of CO₂ capture, storage, use and transport technologies as key tools in the fight against climate change. Asturias, as an industrial region, has a crucial role in the implementation of these technologies to move towards decarbonisation.

- CO₂ Capture and Storage: A Pillar of Decarbonisation

To meet global emission reduction targets, CO₂ capture and storage is positioned as an essential solution, especially in industrial processes that are difficult to decarbonise. In Asturias, these technologies can make a difference, considering that large combustion facilities and regional industry generate millions of tonnes of CO₂ per year.

Although underground storage of CO₂ in Asturias presents geological challenges, the region continues to explore innovative technologies, such as oxy-combustion and post-combustion capture, which can be integrated into key sectors such as steel and chemicals.

- Energy Impact and Technology Challenges

Implementing CO₂ capture requires considerable energy effort. For example, a steel plant in Asturias would need between 20 and 70 MW of power to capture its emissions, as well as transport and storage infrastructure powered by renewable energy. This implies a significant commitment to energy sustainability and an opportunity to lead in technological innovation.

- Industrial Uses of CO₂: Beyond Storage

Captured CO₂ can become a valuable resource. From its use in the food and chemical industry to the production of synthetic fuels, these applications not only reduce emissions, but also open up new economic and employment opportunities in Asturias.

Asturias' Commitment to the Future

Decarbonisation is not just a regulatory obligation; it is an opportunity to position Asturian companies in competitive and sustainable markets. With a focus on innovation, carbon footprint reduction and the creation of new business models, Asturias can lead the way towards a cleaner future.

On this day, we reiterate our commitment to a sustainable energy model and call for collaboration between public and private sectors to make the energy transition a reality in our region. Together, we can transform climate challenges into opportunities for a more sustainable future.
